Facing the Blank Page
How Writing Regularly Can Transform Your Skills (and Boost Your Pitching Confidence!)
Let’s be honest, starting to write can feel scary. Whether it’s that blank page staring back at you or the idea of putting your thoughts out there for the world to see, it’s normal to feel intimidated. I get it. I’m still working on finishing the book I started last year, so I know firsthand how easy it is to let fear or procrastination take over.
Taking inspiration from Friday’s podcast episode, pitches don’t need to be exactly pitch perfect. Sometimes, the best way to gain confidence is simply by starting, just reaching out and trying. One way to build that confidence is to write regularly. By writing blog posts, opinion pieces, or even journaling, you’ll develop your skills and gradually feel more comfortable putting yourself out there.
But here’s the thing: the only way to get past that fear is to take the leap. Writing is one of those skills that gets better the more you do it. Think of it like cooking or working out, the magic is in showing up consistently. If you want to become a better writer, there’s no secret sauce; you just have to start writing. Blog posts, opinion pieces, random thoughts, whatever gets you going. Not only will it help you get better at putting words together, but you’ll also find your unique voice along the way.
Let’s talk about why writing regularly is such a game changer and how you can make it a habit.
1. Practice Makes Progress
We’ve all heard the phrase “practice makes perfect” (I hate this expression), I like to aim for progress instead. Writing is like any skill, you’ll improve every time you do it. When you write regularly, you give yourself the chance to:
Play around with different tones and styles.
Figure out what kind of writer you are.
Get better at turning complex ideas into clear, readable sentences.
The trick? Just keep going. Even a quick 10-minute writing session can make a difference over time.
2. Clear Your Mental Clutter
Writing helps you make sense of your thoughts. Whether you’re working on a blog post or crafting an opinion piece, you’ll need to:
Organise your ideas into a logical flow.
Back up your points with examples or facts.
Polish your work so it reads smoothly.
This process of organising and refining your thoughts is super helpful. It doesn’t just improve your writing, it sharpens how you think and communicate in general.
3. Connect With Real People
Publishing your writing online (hello, Substack!) is a great way to reach an audience. Sure, hitting “publish” can be nerve-wracking, but it’s worth it. Reader feedback can show you what’s working, what’s not, and how you can level up. Plus, engaging with readers teaches you how to write for different audiences, a skill that’s valuable no matter what you do.
4. Create a Personal Portfolio
Every time you hit “publish,” you’re building a body of work that shows off your skills and growth. Over time, this collection can open doors, whether it’s guest blogging, freelance opportunities, or even writing a book. Think of it as a living resume for your writing.
Tips for Building a Writing Habit
If you’re ready to get started, here are a few tips to make writing regularly feel doable:
Set a Schedule: Decide how often you want to write, daily, weekly, or something in between. The key is consistency, not frequency.
Start Small: Don’t worry about writing epic essays right away. Start with short pieces and build up as you get more comfortable.
Keep an Idea List: Jot down topics whenever inspiration strikes. That way, you’ll always have something to write about.
Edit Without Mercy: Not everything you write needs to see the light of day. Take the time to revise and improve before you share.
Celebrate Your Wins: Look back at your earlier work now and then to see how far you’ve come. It’s a great way to stay motivated.
Just do it!
Writing regularly can be a total game changer. It sharpens your skills, helps you figure out what you care about, and lets you connect with others in meaningful ways. It’s also a fabulous way to practice pitching and having conversations with the media. Each piece you write strengthens your ability to articulate ideas clearly and confidently, which can make a world of difference when it’s time to pitch a story or build relationships with journalists.
