Use Your Own Voice
Builds Trust, Connection, & Loyalty
In a world full of press releases, canned responses, and over-polished social media posts, one truth remains constant: authenticity cuts through the noise. Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur, the face of a small business, or managing PR for a big brand, staying true to your voice is what builds trust, connection, and loyalty.
Think about it: when was the last time you connected with a generic, corporate-sounding statement? Probably never. But the heartfelt caption from your favourite small business or the honest, slightly quirky email from a brand founder? Those are the moments that stick.
So, how do you stay authentic in every piece of communication?
1. Get to Know Your Brand’s Tone of Voice
Before you can authentically represent your brand, you need to know what your voice sounds like. Is it friendly and conversational? Bold and confident? Expert and authoritative?
Here’s a trick: think of your brand as a person. How would they talk? Would they use humour? Keep things short and snappy? Or dive deep with thoughtful insights? Write these traits down, and use them as a guide.
Consistency matters. A lighthearted Instagram post can feel jarring next to a formal, jargon-heavy press release. Make sure your tone flows seamlessly across platforms, whether you’re tweeting, pitching to a journalist, or updating your website.
2. Ditch the Jargon
PR is full of buzzwords: “cutting-edge,” “synergy,” “disruptive.” But here’s the thing—no one actually talks like that. People respond to clear, relatable language that feels human.
Instead of “We’re thrilled to announce our innovative new product launch designed to revolutionise the market,” try: “Big news! We’ve just launched something we’re really proud of, and we think you’ll love it too.”
One feels stiff. The other feels like you’re talking to a friend.
3. Share the Real Story
Every brand has a story, and it’s one of your greatest assets. Why did you start? What do you believe in? What drives you to do what you do?
Don’t be afraid to pull back the curtain a little. Share the wins, but also the struggles and lessons learned. Transparency builds trust, and trust builds relationships.
Remember, people don’t just connect with what you sell, they connect with who you are.
4. Write Like You Speak
Imagine you’re explaining your news to a friend over coffee. That’s the tone you want to capture. Drop the formality, and don’t worry about sounding “professional” all the time. Authenticity is professional, because it’s real.
5. Be Brave Enough to Be You
Here’s the truth: staying authentic means you won’t appeal to everyone, and that’s okay. You don’t need to. When you use your true voice, you’ll attract the people who resonate with your message and those are the people who will stick around.
It’s tempting to mimic others, especially if you see a style that’s working for someone else. But don’t lose sight of your unique vibe. Trust that your voice is enough.
Final Thoughts
In PR, authenticity isn’t just a buzzword, it’s your superpower. It’s what makes people feel seen, heard, and understood.
So, the next time you’re crafting a press release, writing a social caption, or responding to a journalist, pause and ask yourself: “Does this sound like me? Does this feel real?”
